By David

Grazed from Fortune. Author: Jonathan Vanian.

Hewlett-Packard is officially set to split in two. The tech giant filed regulatory documents Wednesday that confirmed its long discussed plans to spin off its printer and personal computer business in November. “Today, I’m more convinced than ever that this separation will create two compelling companies well positioned to win in the marketplace and to drive value for our stockholders,” HP CEO Meg Whitman said in a statement. “Since we announced our plan to separate in October, we’ve made significant progress and remain on track to complete the separation by the end of the fiscal year 2015.”

HP HPQ 1.11% , along with legacy tech companies like IBM IBM 0.29% , has seen its business slump over the past few years as the market for personal computers continues to decrease. Additionally, new rivals like Amazon AMZN -0.58% dominate emerging enterprise technologies like cloud computing…

Chicago Residents Now Stuck With A New 9% “Cloud Tax” On Netflix And Other Streaming Services

By David

Grazed from Consumerist. Author: Kate Cox.

There used to be a whole world of brick-and-mortar retail stores and transactions a city could gather some sales tax from and build into a revenue stream. As more and more goods instead become online services, though, those streams have dried up. Now one city wants to go back to gathering its cash… from your transactions in the cloud.

The Verge reports that residents of the Windy City are about to have to start paying a premium on Netflix and their other streaming services, as a new “cloud tax” takes effect in Chicago today. The logic goes something like this: In the long-gone ancient era of “twenty whole years ago,” when you went down to your corner video store for some rentals and some popcorn, you’d leave a few cents of sales tax behind with your purchase…

By David

Grazed from HuffPost.  Author: Johna Revesencio.

As Cisco switched to a cloud-based collaboration solution, more organizations are now joining the bandwagon of utilizing cloud-based technology to their advantage.  What was once a buzz word in the corporate IT department is now getting a huge potential across the globe. Many private sectors are now using cloud computing to sell and market their products as well as improve their competitiveness. In 2014, US-based insurance company Hartford also signed an agreement with IBM to use private and secured cloud services.

The same goes for London-based education company Pearson. The large publishing company is now delivering education worldwide through cloud.  These large enterprises know how such tools can create greater value for their organizations and not be daunted by the misconceptions about the cloud…

Cloud Computing: Engine Yard Unfurls Deis PaaS for Docker on AWS

By David

Grazed from TalkinCloud.  Author: Mike Vizard.

The simplest way to bring Docker containers into an IT environment is to deploy them on a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) environment that provides a much needed layer of manageability. On Tuesday, Engine Yard, which last April acquired Deis, the most widely used PaaS for building and deploying applications based on Docker containers, announced that it is making an instance of that PaaS environment available on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Now generally available in a commercial edition supported by Engine Yard, Gabe Monroy, creator of Deis and CTO of Engine Yard, said Deis is the only PaaS environment that is built completely using Docker containers…

Cloud Computing: DigitalOcean is raising $83 million to take on Amazon Web Services

By David

Grazed from BusinessInsider.  Author: Matthew Weinberger.

We’re hearing that New York-based DigitalOcean, a hot cloud computing startup founded in 2011 that competes head-to-head with the $6 billion Amazon Web Services juggernaut, has closed a huge round of Series B funding.  The number we’re hearing is $83 million. DigitalOcean would not comment on the round.

Like Amazon Web Services, DigitalOcean lets its customers swipe a credit card and get access to an almost bottomless supply of raw computing power, hosted in its distant data centers…

Government cloud on the rise: NSA and DOJ move to Amazon Web Services

By David

Grazed from CloudComputingNews.  Author: Editorial Staff.

At the Amazon Public Sector Symposium last week, the NSA announced that it will be moving some of its IT infrastructure to AWS. The NSA follows several other federal agencies, including the Department of Defense and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), in joining the CIA in the Amazon cloud in the last nine months.

“The infrastructure as a service which Amazon provides has shown us significant IT efficiencies,” said Alex Voultepsis, chief of the engineering for the NSA’s Intelligence Community Special Operations Group, at a panel last week. Voultepsis then estimated that the agency will save 50-55% on infrastructure costs alone by moving to AWS…

By David

Although Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has not yet opened operations in the US, the rapid development of US e-retailer Amazon, particularly in cloud computing, poses a great challenge to the Chinese company, the Shanghai-based China Business News reports.

Alibaba created a miracle in September 2014 with a record-breaking flotation on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The rise in its stocks sent the company’s value to over US$231 billion, exceeding the combined market capitalization of Amazon and eBay, the two leading US e-commerce companies…

A Word About Cloud Computing Integrators

By David

Grazed from Nasdaq. Author: Stefan Topfer.

As the cloud market is maturing, we can expect a consolidation of this vibrant market. Whereas the initial upsurge was dominated by app developers and providers, the next phase will see an increasing focus on cloud solution providers. Some organizations are using hundreds of apps, not including those apps employees have acquired without involving the corporate IT department. Managing these huge numbers of apps has become a task in itself. Integrating them can be difficult, expensive, time-consuming and often simply impossible.

Some corporate IT providers such as SAP (SAP) are offering cloud solutions for core business units such as human resources, finanance, sales, marketing and procurement. Salesforce (CRM) started off with a CRM solution and added on additional functionality. WinWeb has taken a corporate view and has developed a comprehensive cloud system which integrates the different functions in one package…
