The Alibaba Group is to make an additional investment of $1-billion into Aliyun, its cloud computing unit. The capital will be used to expand Aliyun’s international presence and support infrastructures, in addition to R&D in cloud computing, big data, and the building of a business ecosystem. This move has once again confirmed Alibaba’s determination to expand and develop its cloud computing operations globally.

Aliyun’s global operations have just begun. In this year, Aliyun announced plans to set up data centres in Western US and the Middle East and, later on, the Eastern US, Europe, Singapore and Japan. These plans are designed to serve both the internationalisation of Chinese companies on the one hand, and local customers in those markets on the other…

The amount of data processed in the world doubles every three years and a global commitment to open source technology is the way to handle this growth. An open technology approach fosters innovation through massive community involvement and impedes expensive vendor lock-in. This benefits buyers as markets remain more competitive.

In doing so, open standards and technologies also allow for market hypergrowth, and this is the key to handling the growth of data. A doubling every three years means we’ll be grappling with a full Yottabyte of data in the year 2040. That’s one billion petabytes, an amount of data that, similar to pondering geologic time, I can understand in the abstract but not truly grasp…

Both OpenStack and Docker were conceived to make IT more agile. OpenStack has strived to do this by turning hitherto static IT resources into elastic infrastructure, whereas Docker has reached for this goal by harmonizing development, test, and production resources, as Red Hat’s Neil Levine suggests.

But while Docker adoption has soared, OpenStack is still largely stuck in neutral. OpenStack is kept relevant by so many wanting to believe its promise, but never hitting its stride due to a host of factors, including complexity. And yet Docker could be just the thing to turn OpenStack’s popularity into productivity…

How big is too big? When the supertanker can no longer be agile, maybe it’s time to create a large fleet of swifter vessels. (Being the swifter vessel is an advantage MSPs often enjoy in a marketplace of larger operators.) Google (GOOG) founder Larry Page has announced in a blog post today that he and his co-founder Sergey Brin have formed a new company called Alphabet that will serve as a holding company for the organization’s many companies and initiatives.

The operating company Google will be the largest company in this portfolio structure. Sundar Pichai who has led product and engineering since October 2014 will serve as Google’s CEO. Covering the announcement, the New York Times compared Alphabet’s structure to that of Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, a giant conglomerate that is operated as a holding company designed to give its operating companies more rein to be independent and entrepreneurial even within a corporate giant…
