The amount of data processed in the world doubles every three years and a global commitment to open source technology is the way to handle this growth. An open technology approach fosters innovation through massive community involvement and impedes expensive vendor lock-in. This benefits buyers as markets remain more competitive.

In doing so, open standards and technologies also allow for market hypergrowth, and this is the key to handling the growth of data. Both OpenStack and Docker were conceived to make IT more agile. OpenStack has strived to do this by turning hitherto static IT resources into elastic infrastructure, whereas Docker has reached for this goal by harmonizing development, test, and production resources, as Red Hat’s Neil Levine suggests.

But while Docker adoption has soared, OpenStack is still largely stuck in neutral. OpenStack is kept relevant by so many wanting to believe its promise, but never hitting its stride due to a host of factors, including complexity. Google (GOOG) founder Larry Page has announced in a blog post today that he and his co-founder Sergey Brin have formed a new company called Alphabet that will serve as a holding company for the organization’s many companies and initiatives.

The operating company Google will be the largest company in this portfolio structure. Sundar Pichai who has led product and engineering since October 2014 will serve as Google’s CEO. Covering the announcement, the New York Times compared Alphabet’s structure to that of Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, a giant conglomerate that is operated as a holding company designed to give its operating companies more rein to be independent and entrepreneurial even within a corporate giant…

Microsoft partners have done a good job in making the transition to cloud computing, and now it’s time for them to drive more consumption of cloud services, according to Eric Martorano, the software giant’s general manager of U.S. partner sales. "I think the channel has done a good job of working through this transformation," Martorano said in a keynote Monday at the XChange 2015 conference hosted by The Channel Company, publisher of CRN. "One challenge in the partner community is the need to drive more deployment and consumption of the technology by selling experiences."

Many Microsoft partners are making money from transactional and project-based services, but ones that can deliver managed services and repeatable intellectual property can separate themselves from the pack, Martorano said. Martorano said a potentially big money-maker for the channel is Enterprise Mobility Suite, a licensing bundle launched last year that includes Windows Intune, a paid version of Azure Active Directory with advanced features, and Azure Rights Management Services…

Cloud computing, network virtualisation and on-demand technology services are changing how we think about IT. If these new services become as ubiquitous as predicted we could see companies accessing their IT services remotely, at the expense of their own IT infrastructure and applications.

If this happens, the thinking goes, the importance of the Local Area Network and the IT administrator could diminish as well. It’s not worth saying the last rites over the LAN and IT administrator just yet, though.
