For 50 years, the computer-chip industry has ridden a road of economic miracles, but now it’s reaching an end, and a potential crisis is unfolding for some of the industry’s biggest names.  The phenomenon known as Moore’s Law, which held that the number of transistors on a chip doubled every two years while the cost fell by half, led to vibrant markets such as the personal computer, with ever-rising performance and falling prices.

But Moore’s Law is now breaking down, and the physics of chips is becoming treacherous. Approaching the atomic level in size, transistors have started performing less reliably, making them less efficient. Intel and other semiconductor makers have had to add extra manufacturing steps, increasing costs…

After speaking with hundreds of UK technology leaders about cloud adoption, it is clear that cloud technology is transforming business models and improving cost-efficiency in the enterprise. Despite the positive results, IT leaders have also shared serious concerns. They usually sound something like this:

“The cloud is great. The support is mediocre at best.”
“I am not sure my cloud provider understands my business.”
“I spend thousands of pounds a month for cloud support, but I do not know what they do.”…

Cloud security is a hot topic if ever there was one, so it certainly didn’t slip through the cracks at Intel’s Focus 15 conference, with a talk led by Raj Samani, Chief Technology Officer for EMEA at Intel Security, raising some particularly interesting points. Anyone with even a slight interest in the technology industry will be aware of the hype that has surrounded cloud computing for some time now, but are the security implications really being taken seriously by organisations and, more importantly perhaps, are they fully understood?

Right at the beginning of the talk, Raj made the statement that, although it has been hyped up more than anything else, “to me, cloud computing is not a remarkable technology.” Putting whether you agree with that or not to one side, what is hard to disagree with is that, so far, it has in general been used for fairly unremarkable means…

At first glance, IBM’s purchase all the digital assets of The Weather Company, except the broadcast network, might seem an odd fit. Why would a company best known for its consulting business, "Smart Cities" Initiative and Watson computing division want to absorb a company filled with weather and climate geeks? Clearly, it’s for the data.

Specifically, the company’s computer models that analyze three billion weather forecast reference points, more than 40 million smartphones and 50,000 airplane flights per day. IBM is hoping that weather and climate data will enable the company to expand its suite of predictive tools marketed to sectors ranging from retailers, which need to decide what to stock on their shelves, to local governments that have to determine whether to evacuate citizens ahead of a hurricane…
