85% of line of business (LOB) decision makers in the manufacturing industry are using at least one form of public cloud service, according to a new research study. The report, released jointly by EMC, VCE, and VMware – all now part of Dell in some capacity after the whopping $67 billion deal for the former in October – polled more than 600 decision makers overall across six industries, with one sixth each on telecoms, finance, retail, public sector, oil and gas, and manufacturing.

Yet it was the latter which provided the most interesting results. Cutting costs (33%) and driving efficiencies (29%) are the primary use for public cloud services, according to the respondents, with the majority of line of business employees surveyed (87%) saying they consult IT for cloud deployments…

International Business Machines Corp. spent much of 2015 lowering investor expectations, but the company closed the year with financial results that, while not sterling, contained a few bright spots. Revenue at the 104-year-old computer maker fell 8.5% to $22.06 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015, making for 15 straight quarters of declining sales. Still, the top line came in better than the $22.02 billion Wall Street expected.

The cloud computing, data analytics, security and mobile computing products on which IBM has bet its future grew at a strong pace. Those businesses accounted for about 35% of IBM’s full-year 2015 revenue, or $28.9 billion, said IBM Chief Financial Officer Martin Schroeter. "We’re transforming a big company," Mr. Schroeter said in an interview on Tuesday. "We’ve always said that this was going to take time."…

IBM has expanded its partnership with CSC, a Virginia-based IT services provider, with the goal of developing joint applications to support mobile, analytics and cognitive intelligence across hybrid cloud platforms. The partnership centers around the integration of the IBM Cloud, which includes services such as analytics, mobile, networking and storage, with the CSC Agility Platform, which allows customers to use hybrid clouds across multiple cloud providers as well as their traditional IT environments.

By combining the IBM Cloud with the CSC Agility Platform, CSC customers can now use IBM cloud services in a hybrid multi-cloud environment, according to the announcement. IBM has agreed to incorporate the IBM Cloud as a key component of CSC’s IT strategy as both companies work to help clients meet their compliance requirements…

Microsoft Corp. CEO Satya Nadella announced a new three-part initiative to ensure that Microsoft’s cloud computing resources serve the public good. As part of this initiative the recently formed Microsoft Philanthropies will donate $1 billion of Microsoft Cloud Services, measured at fair market value, to serve nonprofits and university researchers over the next three years.

Microsoft’s three-part commitment focuses on ensuring the cloud can serve the public good in the broadest sense by providing additional cloud resources to nonprofits, increasing access for university researchers and helping solve last-mile Internet access challenges. "Microsoft is empowering mission-driven organizations around the planet with a donation of cloud computing services — the most transformative technologies of our generation," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who on Wednesday will speak at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland…

I have been seeing job ads more and more frequently that heavily emphasise the requirement for ‘current skill sets’. The fact that these ads are putting such emphasis on the importance of skill sets being current signals to me a trend within the DevOps landscape: the ever-widening gulf between technological innovation and those who have exposure to it.

There are two core reasons why this problem exists and is growing. Firstly, maintaining employees with ‘cutting edge’ skill sets for cloud-based development requires either the IT budget of a large corporation or a team small enough to maintain an environment of rapid prototyping and experimentation. Needless to say, these extremes limit the number of candidates with the required abilities…

U.S. tech giant Oracle Corp. held a large-scale cloud computing conference in Seoul on Tuesday in an effort to tap into the fast-growing South Korean market. The annual Oracle CloudWorld gathering, the first of its kind held in the South Korean capital, brought together around 3,000 officials and experts from the IT industry who shared ideas on the cloud computing industry, the company said.

Cloud computing allows users to share conventional computer resources, including software, information and other data through remote servers. Oracle currently has around 70 million users through its clients in its cloud computing segment around the globe. "As South Korea’s market for cloud computing is expected to rise in a full-fledged manner this year, (Oracle) plans to roll out aggressive investment," said Kim Hyoung-lae, who heads Orcale’s South Korean arm…

A metamaterial breakthrough has been funded by Intel at the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Lab at National Taiwan University here. By folding a metamaterial up into the third dimension (3D), Intel has funded a breakthrough in noise suppression–specifically quelling electro-magnetic interference (EMI) thus enabling easier electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) of next-generation high-speed interfaces.
