Huawei Technologies Co. intends to become a major provider of gear and software to global cloud computing providers, aiming for a $10 billion business by 2020. The Chinese company will keep investing in the cloud, its fastest-growing business, as it seeks to supply chips, servers and other equipment to a booming market, said Ken Hu, the rotating chief executive overseeing the fledgling division.

Huawei has begun working with foreign firms including SAP SE and Intel Corp. to crack the market for cloud services. Unlike providers such as Amazon.com Inc. and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., it wants to supply the basic components of computing infrastructure, as domestic industries from education to health care begin to move data online…

Dell Inc. has received approval from regulators in China for its $65 billion purchase of EMC Corp. and plans to close the buyout of the largest technology company in Massachusetts on Sept. 7, the companies said Tuesday. The sale of EMC ends a storied era in the state’s high-tech sector.

The new company, called Dell Technologies Inc., will instantly become one of the industry’s largest suppliers of big-business computing equipment. The sale, first proposed last October, had been viewed for months as a formality despite some early skepticism from investors. Regulators in the US and Europe approved the transaction months ago, and EMC shareholders overwhelmingly voted for the acquisition in July…

Enterprises’ internally operated IT workloads are decreasing due to increasing use of private and public cloud computing services, and the proportion of IT workloads for internal operation will drop from 75% in 2016 to 50% in 2021 and to 19% in 2030, while private clouds will rise to 20% in 2021 and 29% in 2030, and public clouds to 30% and 52% respectively, said VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger at VMworld 2016 taking place in Las Vegas during August 29- September 1.

The number of data centers established by cloud computing service providers in 2016 will for the first time exceed that of datacenters set up by enterprises for own use, reflecting increasing use of public cloud computing services. For nearly 10 years, the Defense Information Systems Agency has been working to provide secure cloud computing to DoD agencies. No longer the exclusive cloud provider itself, DISA now helps agencies use commercial providers in a secure way. Nowadays, the effort centers on applications, if they’re ready for cloud hosting and the best way to go about it. John Hale, the cloud portfolio manager at DISA, explains more on Pentagon Solutions.

It’s no secret that the Pentagon’s wartime budget is now funding a lot of day-to-day requirements, but DoD accounting systems can’t tell how much. New estimates from Government Accountability Office says DoD has routinely dipped into its overseas contingency operations account to fund “enduring” requirements since 2009, but there’s no way to tell which account ultimately funded any particular expense, making it very difficult for Congress to oversee DoD’s operations and maintenance accounts. Andrew Van Ah is GAO’s acting director for Defense Capabilities and Management. He spoke with Federal News Radio’s Jared Serbu about the O&M accounting problem.

Joining an increasing number of companies, Asian telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies has released its own container orchestration engine, the Cloud Container Engine (CCE). Ying Xiong, Huawei’s chief architect of cloud computing, announced CCE version 1.0 at LinuxCon North America, being held this week in Toronto.

Like orchestration engines from CoreOS and Apprenda, CCE will be based on Google open-source Kubernetes platform . During his talk, Xiong discussed the growing use of containers in China. In 2016, Huawei found that 14 percent of companies were using containers in production, and another 23 percent were using them for test and development. About 44 percent had plans to adopt container technologies within the next six months…

Trying to understand what causes flash crashes is no longer just for financial regulators and Wall Street. It’s a big deal in Silicon Valley too. Since billions of dollars were quickly erased from U.S. stocks in May 2010, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has been trying to create a massive repository that would track stock and options trading from exchanges and broker-dealers on a daily basis.

That way regulators could quickly go back and find clues to what caused a market interruption. The lack of progress was highlighted last August when the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,100 points in the first few minutes of trading, sending regulators scrambling once again to figure out what went wrong…
