IBM makes new cloud push with SmartCloud
BM‘s new SmartCloud initially builds on its existing Development and Test Cloud service, using automation and rapid provisioning to slash the time needed for application development tasks. This Enterprise SmartCloud service is available immediately.
In the second half of 2011, the company will introduce Enterprise + SmartCloud, a fully-managed multi-tenant service for running production applications on Windows, Linux or AIX with 99.9% uptime. According to company officials, IBM already has multiple customers running production workloads on Enterprise +.
Dell’s $1B Cloud Efforts Pit it Against Cisco and Amazon
Dell s undertaking a sweeping effort to improve its place in the cloud computing market with several new data centers, services and a converged infrastructure system to compete with Cisco’s Unified Computing System. It’s a pretty significant change of pace for Dell, although not necessarily surprising, as Dell has been very active in buying and building new cloud capabilities for the better part of a year. At the least, it now has the pieces in place to compete on software, services and hardware along with IBM, HP, Cisco and other large systems vendors.

Dell to invest $1bn in cloud computing services
Dell will invest $1bn (£613m) into new cloud-based technologies and datacentres during its current fiscal year.
The company plans to build 12 new "solution centres" and 10 datacentres across the world to expand its cloud computing offering.
A Desktop for Web Computing
Personal computing is steadily migrating to the Web, as people use sites like Facebook and Flickr to store photos, videos, and other files they previously would have stored on a PC. A startup called ZeroPC hopes to provide the desktop for the Web computing revolution–a page that looks and acts like a desktop interface, from which users can access all of their content wherever it is stored online.

G-Cloud director joins VMware
The government’s deputy director of the G-Cloud, Andy Tait, has joined VMware as public services strategy head.
Tait also held the position of deputy director for datacentre consolidation and the application store programme at the Cabinet Office.
Under his new position Tait will work with public service organisations to highlight the role IT can play in driving efficiencies throughout an organisation.

Microsoft, Toyota join forces on cloud computing for cars
Microsoft and Toyota have entered a new strategic partnership to build a next-gen information and telecommunications platform for Toyota’s vehicles based on the Redmond company’s Windows Azure cloud computing system.
The companies say they will participate in an investment of 1 billion yen (about $12 million) in Toyota Media Service Co., a Toyota subsidiary focused on information management. The rollout will begin with Toyota’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles next year, focusing in part on energy management systems.

Cloud computing clients ‘benefiting from Salesforce.com updates’
Salesforce.com customers who have cloud computing solutions from the company are benefiting from the regular updates it makes to its products.
This is according to Steve Fisher, executive vice president of technology for Salesforce.com, who explained upgrades to the core software behind the applications allow clients to focus on improving their own business rather than worrying about whether their IT systems are up to date.
"Every four months we are introducing major new functionality," he stated in comments reported by the Wall Street Journal.
