43 Percent of U.S. Businesses Now Successfully Using Social Media

This past year has seen a rise in U.S. companies using social networks to win new business, reveals a new survey from Regus, a provider of flexible workplace solutions. According to the survey, 43 percent of firms are successfully using social networking to win new customers, up 8 percentage points from last year’s survey.

The research also reveals more firms are using social media to engage with existing customers than a year ago, with the following highlights:

Cloud challenge: right data in the right place

Remember grid computing? An important part of that idea was to use processing power where it was available, and one of the challenges was figuring out ways of getting often large amounts of data to where it was to be processed.

Fast-forward a few years, and we’re all talking about cloud computing. Whether that’s public, private or hybrid, that same issue crops up: if you’re not doing all the processing in one place, how do you get the data where it’s needed, and preferably before it’s needed?

After all, one of the promises of cloud is the idea of responding to peak loads by ‘bursting’ out of your own data centre into one operated by a service provider.

Email Tops Project List as Feds Take Cloud Plunge

Thousands of federal employees will be using cloud-based email systems as government agencies take their first steps in meeting a mandate to inaugurate cloud services within their information technology systems. The White House has directed 25 large agencies to launch at least one cloud-migration project by the end of the year and two more by mid-2012.

The Federal Chief Information Officers Council released a list of 78 candidate projects for cloud migration late last month, and the most popular application among them is email.

HP introduces pre-configured enterprise IT products & services

HP is packaging up its servers, storage, network equipment, management tools and consultancy services in a bid to help businesses implement and rollout pre-configured systems. The strategy, called the HP Converged Infrastructure Solution includes modular, energy efficient data centre designs, cloud and virtualisation based on Hyper-V, VMWare, Citrix or Xen and applications like real-time analytics and data warehouses.
