4 Keys To Hybrid Cloud Planning

By David
Grazed from InformationWeek.  Author: Beth Stackpole.

Amidst all the hype surrounding cloud computing, the hybrid cloud approach– the blending of both private and public cloud environments–is gaining traction. But the reality of building a bridge that effectively leverages the strengths of both architectures is ending up to be a greater challenge than many anticipated.

With private cloud implementations set to accelerate this year, hybrid clouds, too, are destined to grow in popularity. That means organizations are going to have to ramp up efforts to evaluate application and data location scenarios based on factors such as cost, core business enablement, and business alignment, Unisys said in making its 2012 cloud computing predictions…

Where IT is going: Cloud, mobile, and data

By David

Grazed from CNet.  Author: Gordon Haff.

Cloud computing seems to often get used as a catch-all term for the big trends happening in IT.

This has the unfortunate effect of adding additional ambiguities to a topic that’s already laden with definitional overload. (For example, on a topic like security or compliance, it makes a lot of difference whether you’re talking about public clouds like Amazon’s, a private cloud within an enterprise, a social network, or some mashup of two or more of the above.)

However, I’m starting to see a certain consensus emerge about how best to think about the broad sense of cloud, which is to say IT’s overall trajectory. It doesn’t have a catchy name; when it’s labeled at all, it’s usually "Next Generation IT" or something equally innocuous. It views IT’s future as being shaped by three primary forces. While there are plenty of other trends and technology threads in flight, most of them fit pretty comfortably within this framework…

TeraDiscoveries to Use its Inverse Design Software Running on Windows Azure to Advance Its Computational Drug Discovery Process

By David
Grazed from PR Newswire.  Author: PR Announcement.

TeraDiscoveries, Inc., announced today a strategic relationship with Microsoft Corp. that will help it extend the reach of its drug discovery process. Microsoft is providing support and cloud computing time on Windows Azure that TeraDiscoveries will apply to identify inhibitors of 25 biological targets.

TeraDiscoveries will use its Inverse Design software that runs computational models to quickly scan virtual chemical libraries to find the strongest inhibitors of a specific biological target. The process identifies novel drug candidates that feature good clinical trial properties and demonstrate low probability of toxic side effects.

"Designing new drugs that bind to a specified protein target requires finding the best molecule in a vast chemical space. Our approach searches this space much more efficiently and cost-effectively than traditional methods," says Ed Addison, CEO of TeraDiscoveries. "Our strategic relationship with Microsoft enables us to partner with smaller pharmaceutical or medical research companies in the pursuit of these molecules."…

The collaboration required extensive research of existing technologies and the development of unique interfaces to design a set of solutions that meet the growing demand for large data backup resources at reasonable costs for the commercial mid-market.

“We challenged the manufacturer’s and developers to draw outside the lines, to deliver a solution that would grow exponentially while acknowledging the continuous drop in storage medium pricing,” commented Louie Sabarini, Sr. Solution Architect for CoSentry. He added, “The elasticity of price as well as the flexibility of architecture required us to engage in collaboration between disparate technologies providers to achieve a best of breed concept, it’s very cool.”…
