Ilesfay Awarded Second Major Cloud Computing Patent

By David

Grazed from GlobeNewswire. Author: PR Announcement.

Ilesfay(R) Technology Group, a leading provider of cloud-based data replication solutions, today announced it has received its second patent that protects and legitimizes its MatchMaking(R) technology. MatchMaking allows data to be replicated and transferred anywhere in the world 10-30 times faster than traditional methods, speeds only possible since the advent of cloud computing. The algorithm computes the most efficient way to replicate data between sites, only transferring new data in a set rather than the entire data set.

Issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on March 26, 2013, the second patent is No. 8,407,315 and titled "Method for horizontal scale delta encoding." "We’re proud to have invented technology that’s truly unique in the marketplace," said President & CEO Chris McLennan. "One that’s helpful to so many existing and potential customers, adding value to our company at large, and providing even more upside to our investors. We expect to announce additional partnerships and customer relationships in the near future."…

By David

Unified public and private cloud log management, monitoring and analytics are key to the acceleration of enterprise cloud deployments—at least according to Sumo Logic. The vendor has updated its log management and analytics product with new functionality that enables customers to quickly analyze logs generated by SaaS, PaaS or IaaS environments, but it also unveiled new support for Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) S3.

The update includes support for hosted collection for companies that want to store their logs directly in Amazon S3. This follows up on support for Amazon Web Services (AWS) that Sumo Logic announced last spring. At that time, the company introduced its Sumo Logic Free log management and analytics service to AWS. The new functionality really centers on new collection capabilities, which include the ability to:…

Former Yahoo Security Head Lands at Cloud Startup Box

By David

Grazed from All Things Digital. Author: Arik Hesseldahl.

Justin Somaini, the former chief information security officer at Yahoo who left that company in January, has landed a new job at high-flying cloud-computing startup Box. In an announcement set to be made later today, Somaini, whose title will be VP and chief trust officer, is one of three high-profile hires at Box that will be announced later today. The other two are Niall Wall, who will be SVP and head of business development, and Jeff Mannie, who will be VP, controller and chief accounting officer. Wall will take over for Karen Appleton, who has been promoted to senior VP in charge of global alliances.

What does the new title — chief trust officer — mean? “Two things,” Somaini told me in a brief conversation yesterday. “Really driving a trust strategy for the company around the products and services we provide and how that relates to internal functions of how we perform. Second, we have to make sure there’s a tight integration with our customer to base to really understand their needs. And it’s not only that we’re able to respond to their pain points, but that we’re able to predict them.”…

Private clouds considered a detour on the road to public cloud

By David

Grazed from TechTarget. Author: Alex Barrett.

The value of building a true private cloud is murky at best, and five years from now, the push to build private clouds may be remembered as a detour along the road to the ultimate destination: widespread use of the public cloud. In a panel discussion entitled, Building a Private Cloud: Is It Worth It?, at the Modern Infrastructure Decisions conference here last week, IT professionals with and without private clouds discussed the security, cost and management implications of building and operating a private cloud.

Implementing the private cloud on top of an existing VMware Inc. vSphere environment is a way to free up staff from doing low-level tasks, such as spinning up new servers, according to Bob Plankers, a virtualization and cloud architect for a major Midwestern university, and who runs VMware vCloud. "The cloud is about a lot of non-technical things," Plankers said. "I look at staff time spent. Are we able to take advantage of what the humans are good at?"…

IBM reported $23.4 billion in revenue in the first quarter of the year, down more than 5 percent year over year, and $3.03 billion in net income, down 1.1 percent. Analysts had been expecting more than $24 billion in revenue. The company said cloud-computing revenue was up more than 70 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2013, following an 80 percent revenue gain in the previous quarter.

Revenue from software-as-a-Service (SaaS) products, including Tivoli software, were up 65 percent, Mark Loughridge, senior vice president and chief financial officer for finance and enterprise transformation, said during a Thursday call with investors. Revenue coming from enterprises setting up their own private cloud with IBM Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offerings was up “more than 75 percent,” Loughridge told investors…

Microsoft Office 365 Cloud Now $1 Billion Business

By David

Grazed from TalkinCloud. Author: Editorial Staff.

Microsoft’s Office 365 cloud is now a $1 billion business, according to the software giant’s Q3 2013 earnings statement. For Microsoft, that milestone proves Office 365’s momentum is accelerating. And that’s also a big win for Channel Chief Jon Roskill, who wants partners to back the suite. But there’s more work to be done when it comes to the Office 365 channel partner program. Here’s why. First, the progress. According to Microsoft’s earnings call with analysts today, Office 365 has:

  • a $1 billion annual revenue run rate;
  • strong increase in net seat adds; up 5 times;
  • 1 in 4 enterprise customers now have cloud seats with Microsoft;
  • over 75 of Office 465 enterprise seats are running premium (i.e, higher-priced) versions; and
  • recent wins include City of Chicago and the International Federation of Red Cross.
  • Office 365 Progress and Partner Challenges…

By David

Grazed from TalkinCloud. Author: Chris Talbot.

Following Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) announcement of Windows Azure Infrastructure Services, RightScale isn’t missing a beat. The cloud management solutions provider is adding Azure to its list of supported cloud platforms. RightScale is making quite the to-do about its Azure support, as well, with a program it’s calling "Get Your App to Azure" (catchy, ain’t it?). With the new program, RightScale is going to help Azure customers accelerate application development on the Microsoft cloud platform with its multicloud management platform.

"RightScale has the experience and the technology to get companies up and running quickly on Windows Azure Infrastructure Services," said Michael Crandell, CEO of RightScale, in a prepared statement. Google cloud open for business – includes cover charge

By David

Grazed from TechWorld. Author: Brandon Butler.

Google earlier this month made a significant cloud announcement, opening up its infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offering to customers and removing the beta tag from the service. One catch is that customers who sign up for the service need to buy a "gold-level" support package — which costs $400 per month. But while it may cost a pretty penny to get access to the same hardware that Google uses to power the world’s most popular search engine, it’s at least no longer an invite-only beta service.

Some say that Google is one of the companies that could give Amazon Web Services — seen by many as the market-leading IaaS provider — its biggest competition. There are a variety of opinions on that topic, though. Others believe Azure — the cloud platform Microsoft recently made generally available — could be a fierce competitor to AWS as well. Network World recently sat down with the Brian Goldfarb, the marketing executive in charge of Google’s cloud platform, to get the skinny on the company’s latest plans…

Hewlett-Packard doesn’t shy away from taking a few cheap shots every now and again, and its latest line of servers, called Moonshot, proves it. HP has introduced a new line of servers that could be considered a major game changer in terms of power consumption and the cloud.

HP’s new servers consume 89 percent less power and cost 77 percent less to purchase than comparable HP servers. The new line of servers, called Moonshoot, could help CIOs uncover greater savings from cloud computing, according to an article on PCMag.com…
