Desktop as a Service hasn’t exactly taken enterprises by storm just yet, but new options from major IT vendors, platform maturity and IT’s outlook could help cloud-based desktops take off. Hosting virtual desktops in the cloud is still a niche within a niche — even on-premises virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) didn’t grow quickly. With the uncertainty around cloud security and data control, it’s no wonder desktops as a service (DaaS) has had a slow start.

About 6% of the 1,200 respondents to TechTarget’s 2013 Cloud Pulse Survey said they use DaaS now, and 15% said they might use it later this year. For many attendees here at VMworld 2013, cloud-hosted desktops are an intriguing concept; it provides a way to bypass upfront virtual desktop infrastructure costs and provides flexibility and scalability…

Over the long-run, is cloud computing a waste of money? Some startups and other “asset lite” businesses seem to think so. However, cloud computing for specific use cases, makes a lot of sense—even over the long haul. A Wired Magazine article emphasizes how some Silicon Valley startups are migrating from public clouds to on-premises deployments. Yes, read that again. Cash poor startups are saying “no” to the public cloud.

On the whole this trend seems counter intuitive. That’s because it’s easy to see how capital disadvantaged startups would be enchanted with public cloud computing: little to no startup costs, no IT equipment to buy, no data centers to build, and no software licensing costs. Thus for startups, public cloud computing makes sense for all sorts of applications and it’s easy to see why entrepreneurs would start—and then stick with public clouds for the foreseeable future…

Dell has launched a new portfolio of cloud and virtualisation applications including data centre and cloud client computing applications as part of the firm’s collaboration with VMWare. Dell Networking added the new S6000 switching platform for data centres, which incorporates virtualisation and automation features.

The computer technology firm claims that the new S6000 platform offers two times more density and throughput while consuming up to 50% less power than its successors.
