The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) Big Data Working Group today announced the release of Big Data Analytics for Security Intelligence. The new research report details how the landscape of security analytics is changing with the introduction and widespread use of new tools and opportunities for leveraging large quantities of structured and unstructured data. First of all, cloud computing has nothing to do with clouds, says Srini Devadas, an Edwin Sibley Webster Professor of Electrical Engineering and a researcher in Computer Science in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. And second, the term “cloud computing” may have become a buzz phrase in recent years, but the technology behind it has been around for at least fifteen. One of the first major “cloud” milestones occurred in 1999 with the arrival of Salesforce, and the 2002 introduction of Amazon Web Services was the beginning of what has become a whole weather system of computing options.

“The simplest way to define cloud computing,” says Devadas, “is that it involves using a computer that is not on your desk.” Instead, you’re using a computing service powered by a cluster of hardware somewhere in the world and delivered to your terminal over the Internet…

Larry Ellison, the ambitious CEO of enterprising hardware and software company Oracle, is taking the company’s cloud computing options to the next level, according to a new report from PCWorld.com. The article states that Ellison and Oracle are preparing to enter the competitive and in-demand world of in-memory computing services, an announcement that should be music to the ears of tech gurus and information technology experts everywhere.

For those who are unfamiliar, in-memory computing services like the one Oracle will soon offer work similarly to other cloud-based server options, storing a company’s data offsite and off-setting the cost of purchasing physical servers. The difference with in-memory computing is that all of the company’s information is stored in a server’s random access memory (or RAM) rather than in the dark depths of the system. This arrangement allows for easier and faster access of information, simpler analysis of massive data banks, and economical drops in computing prices. In other words, in-memory computing is a big boon for businesses anywhere, and it was only a matter of time before a company like Oracle was going to join the fray…

As cloud computing continues to mature the line between private clouds running on premise or a third-party data center and public cloud computing services gets blurrier with each passing day. At the JavaOne 2013 conference today CloudBees today announced that its platform-as-a-service (PaaS) environment for Java applications can now be deployed on a public cloud in a way that is tightly integrated with the version of it software that IT organizations currently deploy on premise.

In addition, CloudBees announced that it now also supports iOS and OS X environments in addition to Google Android for organizations looking to build and deploy mobile applications in the cloud. According Steve Harris, senior vice president for CloudBees, enterprise IT organizations want to be able to take advantage of inexpensive public cloud services to build and test applications. But when it comes time to deploy them in a production environment they still prefer to have a more secure private PaaS environment that they can more granularly control…
