IBM unveils solutions for private and hybrid clouds

By David

Grazed from CIOL. Author: Editorial Staff.

At InterConnect 2013 IBM unveiled new systems and solutions that address these needs by helping clients and managed service providers (MSPs) build private and hybrid clouds to get the most out of Big Data, social, and mobile workloads. These include PureSystems, Power Systems, Smarter Storage Systems, System x, and Technical Computing offerings that provide the flexibility clients need to quickly deploy clouds.

Clients are looking to leverage public clouds while still maintaining control of them. This is causing organizations to embrace private and hybrid clouds where they can more easily manage in-house resources as they adopt external cloud services…

Next-generation protection for the federal hybrid Cloud

By David

Grazed from GSN Magazine. Author: Dale R. Gardner.

Hybrid-Cloud computing, the combination of private, community and public Cloud infrastructures, delivers advantages. But it also introduces risks, particularly around privileged users and trusted insider threats. Agencies already routinely develop plan of action and milestones (POAMs) to address audit findings on shared administrative accounts, weak and default passwords, and other privileged risks. And regulations mandating tighter privileged user controls have also emerged.

Most recently, an updated release of NIST Special Publication 800-53 brought new requirements. More are found in Presidential CAP goals and long-standing programs, such as HSPD-12 and OMB 11-11, which reinforce the requirement for PIV card controlled logical access to systems, particularly for privileged accounts…

Pure Storage Provides Key to Expanding Virtualised Workloads in Europe and Delivers All-flash Benefits

By David

Pure Storage, the all-flash enterprise storage array company, is attending VMworld Europe to demonstrate to the virtualisation community in Europe how it can accelerate their growing virtualised workloads at an affordable price, using all-flash arrays. During the two-day show, the company will be leading two breakout sessions and is helping kick the event off by sponsoring the vRockstar ‘Block Party’ on Sunday, 13th October 2013.

Storage has long been the Achilles’ heel of virtualisation, limiting the efficiencies that European companies can gain from deploying more virtual machines. The problem lies with the highly random IO stream that is created when mixing workloads through virtualisation, resulting in unpredictable latency. Traditional disk- based storage solutions are unable to provide the high-availability and low latency needed for a virtual environment at an affordable price point. Pure Storage’s all-flash array dramatically improves the end-user experience, providing unrivalled performance at an affordable price, removing the IO bottleneck.

Ubuntu 13.10 Delivers Faster Cloud Setup and Management for Scale-out Environments

By David
Grazed from Canonical.  Author: PR Announcement

Canonical today announced that the next version of Ubuntu for server and cloud environments will be released on 17 October 2013.

“Ubuntu 13.10 delivers the latest and best version of OpenStack, and is the fastest, most flexible platform for scale-out computing,” says Mark Shuttleworth, Founder of Ubuntu and VP Products for Canonical. “Ubuntu is typically used in very large scale deployments. In this release we’ve tuned the cloud deployment experience for very small clusters as well, to support dev-and-test environments.” This 13.10 release makes it possible to deploy a full OpenStack cloud on only 5 servers and offers a sophisticated Landscape dashboard for the management of Ubuntu OpenStack clouds no matter their size.

IBM exec explains Big Blue’s approach to cloud professional services

By David

Grazed from TechTarget. Author: Jessica Scarpati.

In a market practically defined by do-it-yourself provisioning, the notion of cloud professional services seems almost like an oxymoron. Professional services come at a premium price, and cloud computing is, in many ways, a commodity. Yet for that exact reason, cloud providers are acutely aware that improving the profitability of the cloud model hinges on finding a way to boost revenue through complementary services.

IBM, recently named a leader in IDC’s MarketScape for cloud professional services, is finding ways to articulate the value of these services to customers across several markets. Ric Telford, the company’s vice president of cloud services, recently spoke with SearchCloudProvider about how IBM has gained that edge…

Creative destruction and the cloud: Why it’s a good thing

By David

Grazed from TechTarget. Author: Harvey Koeppel.

"Imagine if every Thursday your shoes exploded if you tied them the usual way. This happens to us all the time with computers, and nobody thinks of complaining." — Jef Raskin, creator of the initial concepts that became the Apple Macintosh computer, as quoted in Dr. Dobb’s Journal.

I must admit that I have heard many descriptions of computing but, when I came across this exploding-shoe metaphor, it was (a) different, and (b) caught my attention. Then again, I have always been fascinated by what people have to say about technology, especially new technology, and especially new technology that is disruptive by its nature. Here are a few of my favorites:…

Capgemini Expands Hybrid Cloud Services with Virtustream

By David

Grazed from TalkinCloud. Author: Chris Talbot.

Capgemini, the global consulting, technology and outsourcing services provider, is expanding its cloud portfolio by becoming a Virtustream partner. By partnering with the IaaS vendor, Capgemini is expecting to expand its hybrid and private cloud solutions for its customers.

This announcement follows less than two months after Capgemini’s rollout of a Big Data analytics offering on Amazon (AMZN) Web Services. In the last couple of years or so, Capgemini has also partnered with Microsoft (MSFT) Windows Azure. Although those announcements focused on the public cloud sector, the Virtustream partnership is intended to build out the consulting firm’s hybrid—and to a lesser extent, private—cloud solutions…
