Businesses that ventured early into big data territory leaned on cloud computing for their Hadoop pilot projects, but that’s changing, according to Merv Adrian, analyst with Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner Inc. These days, his clients are increasingly asking how to deploy Hadoop on-premises.

Observations like this highlight how quickly big data and its related technologies are evolving. That’s certainly the case, Adrian and fellow analyst Nick Heudecker argued, with the release of Hadoop 2.0, which became generally available in October. The updated version of the Apache Software Foundation’s popular distributed computing framework made headlines last year predominately because of a new feature called YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), which essentially breaks Hadoop out of batch processing and into the real-time world. A new ENISA report provides advice on how to implement incident reporting in cloud computing. "Incident Reporting for Cloud Computing" looks at four different cloud computing scenarios and investigates how incident reporting schemes could be set up, involving cloud providers, cloud customers, operators of critical infrastructure and government authorities. Using surveys and interviews with experts, ENISA identified a number of key issues:

• In most EU Member States, there is no national authority to assess the criticality of cloud services.
• Cloud services are often based on other cloud services. This increases complexity and complicates incident reporting.

Dell and Red Hat will jointly engineer enterprise-grade, private cloud services based on OpenStack to help customers move to and deploy cloud computing models. As part of the expanded relationship, Dell becomes the first company to OEM Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform. The co-engineered service will be built on Dell infrastructure and Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform. The service will be delivered by a Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform practice within Dell Cloud Services.

Dell and Red Hat will also jointly contribute code to the OpenStack community and collaborate on Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 4, currently in beta, which integrates OpenStack Havana, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5…

Telstra has continued to grow its cloud computing business through takeovers with the purchase of its Melbourne-based technology service provider O2 Networks in a deal believed to be worth around $60 million. O2 Networks designs and builds networks for a range of financial institutions across Australia with 370 customers and 100 staff. O2 worked with Telstra by providing the telco giant’s customers with services and products it did not have.

While neither party would provide any details on the value of the deal, sources close to the transaction valued it at around $60 million. It comes on the back of Telstra’s August 2013 purchase of technology service provider NSC Group for up to $100 million The deal is the latest in a series of purchases designed to bulk up Telstra’s Network Applications and Services (NAS) division, which Telstra chief executive David Thodey has repeatedly pointed to as a source of future revenue…
