There’s a lot of noise and hubbub in the cloud computing marketplace, with vendors large and small vigorously promoting their individual cloud offerings, leading to a fair degree of uncertainty and confusion. How much of it is “pie in the sky” as they say? Perhaps a little history can put “the cloud” into perspective before we examine the hybrid cloud concept. Back in the 1970s distributed computers were interconnected via a networking architecture, using telephone circuits that were permanently-connected or dial-up point-to-point lines.

The early 1980s saw the arrival of packet-switched networks (such as X.25), in which the computers were connected more loosely, without permanent point-to-point lines, with the abstraction of dynamic “logical” circuits rather than a direct physical circuit connection for an entire session. Data packets for a message could travel across different circuits at different times, and the packet-switching protocols saw to the proper eventual reassembly of each message at the destination…

A public sector cloud computing association says court filings made by Google in its defense against a lawsuit filed over email keyword-targeted advertising show the search engine giant mining educational users data for ad targeting purposes. Google offers "Apps for Education," for which it turns off ads by default, notes Jeff Gould, chief executive officer of San Francisco, Calif.-based Peerstone Research, in a blog post on SafeGov.org.

SafeGov describes itself as a forum for information technology providers and experts who are dedicated to promoting trusted and responsible cloud computing solutions for the public sector. But, declarations by a Google attorney (.pdf) and an employee (.pdf) in lawsuit filed in the U.S. Northern California district by some Gmail users who allege that Gmail machine email reading amounts to a violation of wiretapping law show that Google is in at least some cases scanning Apps for Education emails in order to target ads on other Google platforms, such as YouTube…

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said last week that his main rivals were the new generation of cloud companies, and that IBM and SAP were no longer in his gun sights. Oracle is focusing on cloud infrastructure companies such as Amazon and SaaS providers such as former ally Salesforce.com, Ellison told attendees at CloudWorld in San Francisco.

"Oracle may have some big ambitions, but if it thinks it’s going to severely dent this IaaS/PaaS market share picture any time soon, it’s kidding itself," John Dinsdale, chief analyst at the Synergy Research Group, told CRM Buyer. "IBM, Microsoft and Google are all pushing very hard and aggressively growing their IaaS/PaaS revenues, but [Amazon Web Services] remains in a league of its own," he continued…

The term hybrid cloud is used to refer to a combination of public and private clouds that are tailored to suit an organisation’s specific business needs. As a minimum, a single private cloud and single public cloud are all that are required to create a hybrid cloud computing platform. However, organisations can always combine multiple private and public clouds to suit the business’ requirements.

A public cloud enables organisations to adopt enterprise class technologies for their environment at an affordable price point. However, security, availability, compliance, performance, portability and the cloud provider’s market longevity can often be of concern. A private cloud can answer these concerns but is more expensive to deploy and operate. A hybrid cloud offers both these benefits by integrating an organisations data and processing the data into the correct cloud. Among the several reasons for Red Hat to embrace CentOS, its erstwhile copycatting nemesis, one explanation has largely been overlooked: The cloud made them do it. IT vendors had a golden age before the invention of the cloud. It was essentially a risk-free implementation. Customers required a product, sales would propose a solution to which the customer would sign and commit, the customer would pay upfront, the vendor would start manufacturing, and eventually the solution would be delivered to the customer. Once delivered, it was unlikely the customer would suddenly drop the technology, and move on to something else.

At every step of this journey the vendor took steps to prevent its risk. The contract was negotiated per customer, thereby ensuring the deal was profitable. The customer paid upfront so the vendor didn’t need to borrow money or risk the customer defaulting on a debt. The contract commitment was made beforehand, so the customer took the risk that the solution might not be used…
