In a recent customer meeting, several IT staff members were explaining some serious performance problems they were having with a newly deployed IT system. It began with a general discussion among us about the benefits of scalability and agility in cloud computing. Then they dropped a bombshell: “Oh, our application is in the cloud!”

Given our discussion about scalability in the cloud — juxtaposed with a newly deployed IT system that was not scaling even under a normal load — this statement seemed out of place. And here we have the crux of the matter: Why host a brand new IT system in the cloud and not take advantage of a core cloud benefit like scalability?…

At its recent MicroStrategy World 2014 conference, the enterprise software company introduced a portfolio of products to make it easier to perform analytics and make them easier to access through the cloud and mobile forms of computing. These announcements accelerate MicroStrategy’s transition to approaching corporate business users of analytics from its past focus on business intelligence, which typically is purchased by IT. This is a subtle but strategic shift that recognizes where growth opportunities lie and that analytics must be available on any device at any time. MicroStrategy made it clear that advances in the cloud, mobility and big data were integral to its product releases last year and is continuing in this direction in 2014 with the products in its MicroStrategy 9.4 suite.

A little recap from the end of 2013 will illustrate the trend. MicroStrategy launched a product called Analytics Desktop that is freely available to download and use. The product runs locally and provides capabilities for data and visual discovery, the building of dashboards and standard business intelligence…

TechnologyOne has announced that it has invested over AU$80 million to date in creating its cloud offering, which the company hopes will allow its customers to amplify their computing model, reduce costs, and improve productivity.

After six months of speculation and rumors, Microsoft this month finally announced that it had selected Satya Nadella as its next CEO, replacing Steve Ballmer. But who is Satya Nadella, and are there any clues –in his decades of experience at the software giant or otherwise—to suggest whether he’ll toe the line on "devices and services" or plot a new path for the world’s largest maker of software?

A cursory examination of Mr. Nadella’s resume shows that he hails from Hyderabad, India, has serious education credentials—including an engineering bachelor’s degree, a master’s in computer science, and a second master’s degree in business administration—and worked at Sun Microsystems before joining Microsoft in 1992.
