While the cloud-computing market continues to grow, there appears to be some degree of blowback with the upcoming IPO of Box. While there are a few cloud-computing companies that are seeing far more investor buzz than profits, there are companies turning profits in the cloud.

Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) has a nice niche with its subscription cloud model, while IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) have different, but successful cloud strategies. The three large-cap companies are diversified, but have solid positions within the cloud segment. They offer investors a less-risky alternative to the companies that are cloud-only, but still have the ability to capitalize on the anticipated growth in the cloud market…

In my article on how standardization can unleash the Cloud’s potential in Europe (in French), I talked about the European Commission’s new strategy for harnessing the Cloud in Europe. Among the various measures announced, the European Commission asked the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to provide a roadmap for cloud computing standards (especially related to interoperability, portability and data security).  In this post, I will present the results of ETSI’s report. According to the organization, the cloud-standards landscape is complex but not chaotic, and by no means a jungle.

One of the main reasons quoted for moving some or even all of your in-house computing to the Cloud is the potential for significant cost savings.  The pay-as-you-go model of Cloud computing has indeed enabled some organisations to make major savings, however some others have finished up with bills far higher than they expected.

Be aware of exactly how your CSP (Cloud service provider, such as BitCloud) assigns costs. Cloud computing is rightly regarded as very cost effective because system resources are allocated “on demand” and in an “elastic” fashion.  It’s up to you, not the provider, to constantly monitor your usage of whatever cloud services you utilise…

According to Inquisitr.com, Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray says the PS4 GPU will always win over the Xbox. “The PS4 has more COMPUTE units, and faster memory and a whole bunch of things, that would make that [Xbox One / PS4 parity] physically impossible to happen.”

“But Microsoft has been showing off the Xbox One cloud computing capabilities. Both systems have pretty much the same processor, although the Xbox One CPU is clocked slightly faster, but in physics and AI heavy situations, cloud computing is claimed to make a huge difference. The cloud computing function provided by Microsoft’s Azure server is already being used in Titanfall, but a new demo shows off how physics calculations can be offloaded.”…

Cloud computing may be the next logical evolution of virtual data centers, but rushing into a private cloud design can create more problems than it solves. Unfortunately, many companies (or at least C-level executives) fall into the trap set by software vendors and believe that they need a cloud yesterday — and that building one is as simple as selecting a product.
