Cloud computing has entered a new and exciting era. No longer is it just a service that companies are thinking about, firms are now entering what Forrester Research calls a "hypergrowth" phase in which the cloud is being implemented throughout the total IT infrastructure.

Record Revenues

In 2013, the public cloud market saw revenues of $58 billion. Forrester’s latest study, featured at ZDNet, predicts the public cloud market will grow to $191 billion by 2020. This growth in the use and maturity of public cloud platforms is solidifying the technology’s status as a go-to deployment and solution for various business needs. The current exponential adoption of cloud services at firms is considered the hypergrowth — or second stage — of technology, according to Forrester. Adlink, a provider of embedded computing solutions for industrial applications announced this week that it will deploy an M2M software as a service application developed by Gemalto which collects and analyses remote sensor data in the cloud. The platform connects remote monitoring devices to the cloud so Adlink customers can continuously monitor data being collected from them – CPU speed, system restart logs, total operation hours, and the like.

The data is sent to a web-based dashboard where performance levels can be assessed and help inform technical maintenance regimes as well as business process automation. “Adlink’s device-to-cloud strategy is a new model for all critical industrial businesses, demonstrating the impact and benefits of M2M on both instant data collection and management,” said Laetitia Jay, vice president of M2M solutions and services at Gemalto…

Enterprise startup Zendesk is moving full-speed ahead toward its IPO, even though investors have cooled towards cloud companies in recent weeks. Zendesk has not set a date for its first day of trading on the public markets, but it just priced its shares, according to documents filed with the SEC.

It plans to sell over 11 million shares at $8 to $10 a share. At $9, the midpoint, it expects to raise about $90 million. At that price, the company would be valued at $632 million. None of the major stakeholders are selling as part of the IPO and here’s something interesting about that: the SEC documents reveal that the company’s three founders do not have huge ownership stakes…

A study ordered by US President Barack Obama and released Thursday concludes that analysis of “big data” can help society in many ways, from improving health care to spurring economic growth. But the report also said the vast expansion of computer analytics of large data banks creates new threats to privacy, and recommended updated rules and laws to protect stored information.

“The big data revolution presents incredible opportunities in virtually every sector of the economy and every corner of society,” said John Podesta, a former White House chief of staff who led the Big Data and Privacy Working Group. Podesta, in a blog post accompanying the report, said “big data is saving lives” by helping analyze trends in disease, infection and caring for babies born prematurely, among other things…

For most enterprises, the initial phase of the cloud transition is over.
