Cloud Foundry Foundation
, home of the industry-standard platform for cloud applications, kicked off the 2017 European Summit in Basel, Switzerland, today at the Congress Center. Executives from Allianz, IBM, Pivotal and Swisscom, among others, will join Cloud Foundry end users and open source developers on the main stage over the two-day event to discuss project updates, share company stories of digital transformation and present Cloud Foundry use cases.

"We expect our third European Summit to once again grow significantly year-over-year," said Abby Kearns, Executive Director, Cloud Foundry Foundation. "This is a direct result of the continued adoption amongst enterprise users and growth of our ecosystem. When coupled with the launch of Container Runtime — a Kubernetes-based approach to Cloud Foundry — this event marks a major milestone for our community."

The Foundation shared highlights including the following:

Cloud Foundry Container Runtime

Deploying and managing containers is easier – and more flexible – using the updated Kubo project, now Cloud Foundry Container Runtime, now the default Cloud Foundry approach to deploying containers using Kubernetes and BOSH (www.cloudfoundry.org/cloud-foundry-launches-container-runtime-default-container-deployment-method-cloud-foundry-using-kubernetes-bosh).

Cloud Foundry Application Runtime Survey

The Cloud Foundry Foundation released its first semi-annual User Survey whose findings show Cloud Foundry Application Runtime usage among developers grew across industries and across the globe – especially at large organizations. Respondents noted Application Runtime increased developer productivity by 3X by cutting time needed for development cycles. The technology also improved enterprise flexibility and saved money (www.cloudfoundry.org/global-survey-finds-cloud-foundry-application-runtime-cuts-development-cycles-improves-flexibility-saves-money/).

"The Foundry" Marketplace

Cloud Foundry is more than just a platform – it encompasses an ecosystem of distributions, application services, training, IaaS providers, and consulting and integrators that provide a full range of solutions to DevOps professionals. Today the Foundation launched an online "marketplace" for Cloud Foundry users called The Foundry. For those just getting started, or who want to expand their use of the platform, it is a directory of more than 600 solutions and services, including Cloud Foundry distributions from Atos, Huawei, IBM, Pivotal, SAP and Swisscom (www.cloudfoundry.org/cloud-foundry-launches-online-marketplace-for-expanding-ecosystem)

Foundation member news includes:

Home Depot

The Home Depot®, the world’s largest home improvement retailer, has joined the Foundation as a Gold member (www.cloudfoundry.org/cloud-foundry-power-user-the-home-depot-joins-foundation-as-gold-member).
SUSE CaaS Platform update introduced, SUSE Cloud Application Platform to follow
Today SUSE introduced SUSE CaaS Platform 2, a container management platform based on Kubernetes technology, and is previewing SUSE Cloud Application Platform, based on Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes technologies. As enterprises seek to become more agile by more rapidly delivering applications to customers, suppliers and internal users, they are embracing new architectures, processes and technologies designed to accelerate IT. SUSE® helps customers speed application delivery with a growing portfolio of solutions built on industry-standard open source technologies.

Swisscom

Swisscom will be announcing it is stepping up its commitment to Cloud Foundry, actively participating in the Cloud Foundry Container Runtime project to provide containers with Kubernetes, and currently testing a prototype for offering Swisscom Cloud Foundry on Amazon Web Services as a base for future multi-cloud offerings.

Stark & Wayne

Stark & Wayne has partnered with Chef to build a native integration between Cloud Foundry and Habitat, an open source project led by Chef that gives developers and operations teams complete control over the cloud-native application lifecycle. The integration lets developers build applications in Habitat and then deploy them as Docker containers in Cloud Foundry. Cloud Foundry can control the lifecycle of the application while taking advantage of Habitat features such as Clustering Topologies and Rolling Deploys.

Stark & Wayne will release the next version of SHIELD by the end of the year. It features an improved UI with an "operator-first" approach, and includes enhanced encryption.

Mendix

Mendix and SAP both announced a global reseller agreement in which SAP will resell and support the Mendix Platform as "SAP Cloud Platform Rapid Application Development by Mendix." The solution helps customers unlock the potential of low-code developers to build and deploy enterprise applications up to 10x faster. Running on SAP® Cloud Platform, the solution offers tight integration with SAP systems, data and services such as the SAP Leonardo digital innovation system.

Altoros

Altoros has announced the general availability of Heartbeat for Pivotal Cloud Foundry. This full-stack monitoring tool built by Altoros provides PCF operators and developers a 360-degree live view on their Cloud Foundry deployments.

Cloud Foundry community news includes:

CF Local allows you to stage and launch Cloud Foundry apps locally, as well as pull them from or push them to a real deployment of Cloud Foundry. This project has been voted for inclusion in the Extensions PMC as a new incubating project. CF Local is a CF CLI plugin that acts as a translation layer between Cloud Foundry apps and a local (or remote) Docker daemon. CF Local also makes it easy to iterate on CF apps without re-staging them by utilizing a combination of volume mounts and SSH tunnels to services running in CF.

"SAP believes open source communities are incredibly important to the future of technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning – not to mention cloud and containers," said Björn Goerke, SAP Cloud Platform president and chief technology officer, SAP. "This is why SAP is not only a founding member and platinum sponsor of the Cloud Foundry Foundation, but also delivers on its promise of leveraging open technology by operating the Cloud Foundry environment in SAP Cloud Platform on multiple public cloud infrastructures. SAP continues to increase its active contributions to open source."

The European Summit comes on the heels of a record-setting Silicon Valley Summit. With support from Platinum sponsors Google, SAP, IBM and Pivotal, the 2017 Summit in North America set new attendance records. Cloud Foundry has seen vast growth worldwide with 2,800 contributors since inception; 93,000 commits in the last 24 months; 70,000+ people participating in global community events; and 67 total members. According to internal research, Cloud Foundry has 35 percent of the total market across all deployments, making it the industry leader in the growing cloud application platform market. As stated in market research from Gartner, Cloud Foundry’s total market value is approximately $2.8 billion, rising to $5.25 billion in a few years.

Nearly 1,000 enterprise developers, architects, engineers and executives from around the world are expected to attend the highly technical Cloud Foundry Summit in Basel. Attendees will learn Cloud Foundry from those who build it and use it every day. They will join other developers and CIOs to gain first-hand access to Cloud Foundry roadmaps, training and tutorials, and to see how others are using Cloud Foundry to support continuous innovation and application portability.

Attendees will also have access to Cloud Foundry Developer Certification (CFDC) at Summit. Performance-based, community-based and independent of any distribution vendor, Cloud Foundry Developer Certification is the guaranteed way to demonstrate cloud skills and allow developers to be highly productive while working on top of Cloud Foundry.

Summit Europe is supported by Platinum sponsors Pivotal, SAP and Swisscom; Gold sponsors anynines, Datadog, Dell EMC, Google Cloud, IBM, SUSE, Virtustream and VMware; and Silver sponsors AppDynamics, Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Dynatrace, GrapeUp, Solace and Volkswagen.

Developers can get the Cloud Foundry for Developers course for free when purchasing the exam at regular price – a savings of $450. This offer ends Friday, October 20, at midnight P.S.T. Code: CFCREATE https://identity.linuxfoundation.org/pid/648
