What is the exact meaning of the term ‘platform as a service’? Often shortened to PaaS, the simple definition is that it is a cloud resource on which you can build and run your own application. But like many definitions in the field of cloud computing, this simple explanation is open to many different and potentially misleading interpretations.

PaaS sits between the two other ‘aaSes’ of the cloud computing stack, offering more functionality than bare infrastructure as a service (IaaS), while falling short of the finished, ready-to-run applications provided by software as a service (SaaS).
