Centrica plumbs into SaaS service desk

Gas and electricity utility Centrica has switched on an cloud-based service desk system from supplier Service-now.com.

The Service-now.com system was implemented with support from Fujitsu, which called it one of the most complex single phase implementations of the technology. Centrica already outsources application management to Fujitsu.

Software-as-a-service solutions are allowing companies to work more effectively while also cutting IT costs.

This is the suggestion of IT Pro Portal columnist James Nixon, who stated that such cloud-based services are helping to "revolutionise" technology for both personal and business users.

"Hosted apps known as 'software-as-a-service' … enable workers to collaborate, sharing documents and spreadsheets online," he pointed out.

Mr Nixon added that such offerings frequently have an impact on a company's bottom line.

Software as a service puts public networks under pressure say analysts

The development of Cloud, software as a service and video streaming is putting public networks under severe pressure, analysts at the NetEvents Summit in Istanbul, have warned.

New networking technology and supporting applications are available and network suppliers should to be bold in innovating to keep pace with data growth, said Jeremiah Caron, VP at Current Analysis.

There are "large and importance" differences between software-as-a-service and Application Service Provider (ASP) models.

This is according to TNooz columnist Glenn Gruber, who compared the merits of both methods of accessing software applications on the internet.

He said that software-as-a-service's advantage is that it has a consumption-based model, which allows companies to only pay for the services they use.

ASP instead offers a hosted single instance of the software and database for each user, Mr Gruber explained.

SAP software-as-a-service tool allows businesses to measure CO2 impact

SAP has upgraded a software-as-a-service application that lets businesses measure their greenhouse gas emissions in a simple manner.

Its Carbon Impact OnDemand 5.0 can now be used in more than 50 countries, while its new features include the ability to obtain carbon emission and energy use data from business application software suites and building management systems.

The software-as-a-service tool also includes modelling functions which allow environmental managers to predict the impact of their plans to cut carbon output.

Sage Beefs Up Services in Sage Act! 2011

According to TMC Net writer Tracey Schelmetic, the use of the technology can allow businesses working in this industry to improve their flexibility while lowering costs.

"Call centres using software-as-a-service-delivered solutions can 'virtualise' the applications, structuring their call centre entity in the best configuration possible for high quality and controlled costs," she stated.

Salesforce.com's Jigsaw acquisition 'will improve data quality'

Salesforce.com has said data quality improvements will result from its purchase of Jigsaw.

Jigsaw for Salesforce CRM takes crowd-sourced information from Jigsaw and applies it to Salesforce.com applications such as Chatter.

This is intended to keep the data being employed in such systems as up-to-date as possible.

The company believes data quality will be improved for its business applications as there are around 1.4 million people updating Jigsaw's database, as well as about 22 million contacts linked into its services, reports ZDNet.
