Internet-hosting service Rackspace (NYSE: RAX) expanded its portfolio of OpenStack-powered cloud products for enterprises, with Tuesday’s introduction of new open-source, public-cloud offerings and a new control panel for cloud-based service management.

"Rackspace is disrupting the current model of how IT is consumed," CEO Lanham Napier said in a statement.

"We have delivered on our promise to implement OpenStack in our cloud offerings, and to free customers from the vendor lock-in that they face at other major cloud providers," he said. "We’re delivering open, high-performance, scalable and easy-to-use cloud solutions, while empowering customers to choose features, services, prices and locations based on the needs of their business."…

Rackspace claims the milestone is the first large-scale, production-ready public cloud deployment powered by OpenStack and puts it on par with cloud heavyweights like Amazon Web Services (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG).

The new offerings mean customers can set up their own OpenStack software and run it in their own data centers, on Rackspace’s cloud, or on another OpenStack cloud, Rackspace said in a statement.

"How does little David whup these Goliaths?" Napier was quoted as saying in a New York Times blog post. "Amazon and Google are playing a scale game, racing to drive prices down as fast as they can. We’re trying to run a high-touch service model. As things advance, people will really need help."

The company’s Cloud Databases offering is built on infrastructure optimized for running databases in public cloud environments. The new Control Panel product is designed to give IT administrators and developers to manage both existing and new cloud products and get real-time status information about the state of infrastructure.
