Midokura, the global innovator in software network virtualization, today announced the next generation of its Midokura Enterprise MidoNet (MEM) technology. MEM 5.0 is a scalable network virtualization solution designed for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds. The new version builds upon Midokura’s award-winning, enterprise- grade technology to support even the most critical network virtualization deployments with significantly new enhanced operational tools for OpenStack operators.

"We are pleased to offer the market a significant new version of our network virtualization technology," said Pino de Candia, CTO of Midokura. "Operational tools are generally geared towards configurations, monitoring in OpenStack, but they offer no visibility into encapsulated traffic. From Midokura’s own experience as an operator, and by working with operators ourselves, we’ve seen firsthand the dire need for analytic and end-to-end operational tools for management of network infrastructure. Midokura Enterprise MidoNet 5.0 builds upon our popular technology to meet this need, making OpenStack far simpler to manage, operate and also troubleshoot."

MEM 5.0 offers an intelligent, software-based network abstraction layer between the hosts and the physical network, allowing operators to build isolated networks in software overlaying pre-existing hardware-based network infrastructure. Designed for distributed computing, MEM provides per-tenant network control so that operators can create and make changes to the virtual network without disturbing the physical infrastructure via the intuitive MidoNet Manager.

Midokura continues to see overwhelming demand and is the trusted network virtualization vendor of choice for large-scale OpenStack deployments for leading organizations, including Blue Jeans Network, Dell, Colt Technologies and Overstock.com, to name a few.

The significant new features and functionality in MEM 5.0 include:

MEM Insights. This innovative new technology offers end-to-end operational tools, including advanced analytics and dynamic visualization. OpenStack operators benefit from rich, dynamic data visualizations that visually communicate relevant, up-to-date details of the state of the virtual network for any operational facets of interest. The benefit is more simplicity, security and agility over networks, thanks to the following aspects:

  • Flow history, including past flows, provide a complete view of historical flows through physical hosts and virtual routers and bridges for easier troubleshooting in order to improve network performance.
  • Top Usage Reports, providing cloud operators with visibility into network consumption ranked by highest tenant usage. Monitoring usage by tenant is helpful for organizations implementing Network-as-a-Service for showback or chargeback scenarios.
  • Traffic Counters, providing operators with the ability to monitor bandwidth and examine the load on virtual objects in real-time. This is useful for operators to identify bandwidth abuse and proactively address issues that may affect network performance.
  • Port mirroring, allowing users to mirror any device, including: ports, bridges and routers and output, onto a deep-packet inspection firewall or intrusion detection system (IDS). This is useful for networking and security professionals to proactively monitor their virtual network and to detect anomalies.

Support for NFV use cases. Support is achieved via MEM’s service chaining technology to virtualize network nodes. The result is technology preview integration with Intel Security Controller (ISC), allowing for easy implementation of virtual machine and container level security policies.

Improved Application Availability. Via the new MEM release, all network services are distributed and fault tolerant, eliminating the single points of failure that could negatively affect application performance.
