Cloudera Puts Its Money Where Its Tech Is

Commercial Hadoop startup Cloudera has rounded out its support of the Apache Software Foundation by becoming a Silver-level sponsor. Cloudera already contributes code back to the Apache Hadoop project — the Apache Hadoop distribution is the foundation of the Cloudera Distribution for Hadoop (CDH) — and several Cloudera employees sit on the Hadoop Project Management Committee. Further, Cloudera’s Doug Cutting (and Hadoop creator) is the ASF chairman.

By sponsoring Apache, Cloudera joins the ranks of fellow Hadoop visionaries Yahoo, Facebook and IBM, as well as MapReduce creator Google. Google and Yahoo are Platinum-level sponsors, and Facebook and IBM are Gold-level sponsors. Of course, allthese companies are involved with Apache and open source in general, far more extensively than Cloudera’s limited involvement around Hadoop, so don’t let its lesser sponsorship level fool you. Of the companies building their businesses around Hadoop, Cloudera is the only one on board as an Apache sponsor.
