Cloud computing solutions offer users a wide array of potential benefits, it has been explained.

According to Gartner research vice president Rakesh Kumar, there are a number of factors which are leading to more people and businesses considering making use of the technology.

"The potential benefits of cloud are a shift from ‘capacity’ on demand to ‘capability’ on demand, a reduced cost of computing resources and a shift from technology use to ‘value’ consumption," the expert said.

A report from Gartner said there is plenty of diversity in the products offered by cloud computing providers, with a rapidly-growing number of enterprises beginning to make use of the services.

Earlier this month, Geekzone blogger Nate Dunn said the cloud is particularly suited to companies which have just been set up.

He explained such businesses can purchase a small amount of capacity to begin with, expanding on this as they become more established and require more IT space.
