Adaptive Computing, the company that powers many of world’s largest private/hybrid cloud and technical computing environments with its optimization and scheduling software, today announced it has been awarded five patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office related to technologies that make cloud computing more energy efficient. This raises the company’s total number of patent grants to 31 and bolsters its private cloud portfolio as one of the richest in existence.

The patents apply to Adaptive Computing’s Moab software and cover multiple significant aspects in intelligent power management, including patented concepts of:

  • Calendar-based power capping – Helps navigate power quotas by identifying optimal times to operate data-intensive simulations
  • On-demand power management – Optimizes workload by properly allocating resources and powering off servers as needed
  • Predictive placement – Employs power-aware policies to manage energy consumption within data centers more evenly and save on cooling costs…

“We have increased our patent portfolio by 50 percent within the last year, and these patents make Moab the most workload-aware scheduling solution on the market,” said Rob Clyde, CEO of Adaptive Computing. “Since 2008, we have been successfully using many of these power-aware capabilities with our users. As evidence for the value these patents carry, one of our biggest customers was able to completely pay for Moab within the first few weeks of adoption from the resulting power savings.”

Adaptive Computing’s latest issued patents include:

  • U.S. Patent 8,370,495 – On-demand compute environment
  • U.S. Patent 8,370,898 – System and method for providing threshold-based access to compute resources
  • U.S. Patent 8,413,155 – System and method for a self-optimizing reservation in time of compute resources
  • U.S. Patent 8,418,186 – System and method of co-allocating a reservation spanning different compute resource types
  • U.S. Patent 8,464,266 – System and method for enforcing future policies in a compute environment

“These patents enable our customers to achieve the greatest work-per-watt delivery from their computing systems,” said David Jackson, Adaptive Computing’s CTO, founder, and primary author on the company’s patents. “When we saw a premium beginning to be placed on power management several years ago, we saw an opportunity to pioneer innovation in intelligent power management. Now that the hardware being released is mature enough to handle these energy optimization capabilities, we have a great deal of flexibility to exercise these ideas.”

In addition to green computing and workload-aware power management, Adaptive Computing’s rapidly expanding patent portfolio encompasses other key areas of cloud computing, such as data management, guarantees, reservations, billing, managing complete environments, dynamic system optimization and cloud-bursting.
