Aconex, provider of the #1 cloud solution to manage the world’s largest construction and engineering projects, has joined the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA). This is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within Cloud Computing, and to provide education on the uses of Cloud Computing to help secure all other forms of computing.

Aconex provides cloud-based solutions built specifically to manage information and processes for construction and engineering projects. The company has helped owners, contractors, and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms successfully deliver more than 16,500 projects worldwide, valued at over US$1 trillion…

These projects typically involve large numbers of interdependent companies collaborating on documents, communications and complex workflows. Implemented on a multi-tenant architecture in the cloud, Aconex solutions are independent of any company and therefore provide neutral access to all project participants and stakeholders. At the same time, project team members retain control and ownership of their proprietary information.

Security in the Cloud

"Project information security in the cloud is critical to our clients and to the global construction industry," said David Chatterton, Aconex chief information officer. "Projects are becoming more complex with large, geographically dispersed teams and risk is increasing. We continue to advance our information security management standards and practices in order to deliver the highest possible quality of service and maintain the trust of our clients. Membership in the Cloud Security Alliance supports this priority, and we’re pleased to represent the construction software industry in the CSA."

According to Chatterton, information security in addition to high performance and scalability is a cornerstone of the Aconex global service delivery infrastructure. Key elements of the company’s security architecture include:

  • Annual certification of operations with ISO 27001, the highest global standard for information security management
  • Third-party data centers with co-located instances in all geographic regions, compliant with TIA942 Tier III standards for redundancy
  • Flexible access permission controls by project, by company and by individual
  • Advanced authentication options for simple yet secure user identity validation
  • Data encryption and control of what information is shared with other organizations on a project team
  • Performance and reliability monitoring for around-the-clock visibility of issues, risks and threats to ensure data protection.

The advantages of the cloud Software as a Service (SaaS) for construction management have been established across tens of thousands of projects. These advantages include:

  • Fast, flexible implementation of new projects weeks rather than months
  • Savings on the cost of software licenses and upgrades, hardware, and operations
  • Ready access to project information and processes across many different organizations
  • Support for mobile devices and construction apps anytime/anywhere project access
  • Scalability to manage capital projects of all sizes, including megaprojects with multiple terabytes of data.
