Veritas Study Shows That Organizations Are Moving to the Cloud Without Evaluating the Impact of a Cloud Outage

Grazed from Veritas

New findings from a study by Veritas Technologies, a leader in multi-cloud data management, indicate that an alarming majority (60 percent) of respondents have not fully evaluated the cost of a cloud outage to their business and are therefore ill prepared to deal with the impact of an outage.

While cloud service providers offer infrastructure-based service level objectives, the research indicates that many organizations fail to understand their own responsibility, in addition to that of the cloud service providers', in ensuring that their critical business applications are adequately protected in the event of an outage.

Why Your Staff May Resist a Move to the Cloud

Deciding to move part of your business to the cloud is something you will have considered carefully before implementing. You will have gone through every aspect of how this change will help you, your business and your staff. There will have been meetings, planning sessions, budget calculations, a lot of time and effort put into the project, and now you're excited and eager to get going. It can, therefore, be very disappointing and frustrating to reach this stage of the process and find that when you tell your staff about the changes, they seem at best underwhelmed and quite possibly unhappy and even angry. Why are you getting this reaction, and what can you do about it?

You know it makes sense

When you have analyzed how a change in your business will affect your operations and profits, you are in possession of all the facts and know how beneficial this change will be. You've had time to digest every aspect and implication of how this new system will work and you know it will make significant improvements in your productivity and your ability to interact seamlessly with your clients. The problem is that your staff don't know any of these things! When you gather them together to tell them all about the fantastic new system they'll be using, they won't take in all the positives, but will hear words like "change" and "automation." This may cause them to start to worry about the disruption to their routines and even whether this means their job is in danger.

How To Make Your IT Department More Efficient

As an employer, it's important to be able to inspire your team to be as efficient and productive as possible. This can be a challenge, particularly in the IT department which can be one of the most difficult areas in which to work in a company due to the pressures and requirements. However, if you can balance a leadership ability with being someone the team looks up to, you should be able to get the best out of everyone. Here are some ways to do it.

Be Authentic

It's easy to spot when someone is not their authentic selves, and a lacking authenticity in the workplace will always be viewed with mistrust. The IT department requires a manager who is able to be themselves. This will mean you can be more relaxed around them, and more able to help them when they need you rather than concentrating on keeping a mask on at all times.

You don't have to let your employees into every aspect of your life, but it can certainly help if you let them know a little about you. A manager who is an unknown to them will be unable to gain the trust and friendship of their team in a way that someone who is completely themselves can.
