Cloud Computing Requires IT To Evolve

Grazed from MeshIP. Author: Danny Palmer.

The “cloudification of services” means that IT has become the backbone for every other part of the enterprise, and the department needs to evolve in order to keep up with the pace of change. That’s what Frank Slootman, president and CEO of ServiceNow, told the audience during his keynote at the platform-as-as-service IT solution provider’s Knowledge 14 conference, taking place at the Moscone Centre in San Francisco.

“We really think IT needs to start thinking differently about itself. Too many of us think of IT as another department like facilities, HR or a general services type department. We don’t see it that way,” he said, using the metaphor that IT needs to be strong enough to be the organization’s backbone as more move their services into the cloud...

Govt should adopt 'cloud first' policy

Grazed from CIO. Author: Byron Connolly.

The Federal Government should follow other sectors like banking and adopt a ‘cloud first’ policy for all low risk, generic IT services. This was the first of two cloud-related recommendations made by the National Commission of Audit today. The commission said this policy could help reduce IT costs over the next three to five years as cloud computing becomes the default option.

“The Commonwealth Government has been slow to adopt cloud computing. A reliance on bespoke, legacy systems, concerns about security and privacy of placing public data in the cloud, and general risk aversion all impede progress,” the commission said. The second recommendation was to establish a whole-of-government cloud computing provider panel...

Cloud Computing: Revenge of the CIO - the new chief enabler

Grazed from InformationAge. Author: Ben Rossi.

It has been about a decade since cloud computing emerged as the third platform — the next phase of the IT revolution beyond mainframe and client/server. It has taken a while, but cloud services as a platform for enterprise computing are showing signs of maturity, especially where data security and regulatory compliance are concerned.

In the past, these two areas have caused a lot of restless nights for CIOs wondering where their enterprise data is and who is accessing it. Many CIOs are reluctant to adopt cloud services, at least until they can feel confident that enterprise data isn’t at risk and that compliance requirements can be met...

Layered Interleaving - Securing Storage of Data in the Cloud

Grazed from ijset. Author: S. Malcom and D. Dhayalan.

The storage of data and information in Cloud has many challenges in designing that has been profound influence on the performance of the system. The biggest issue when storing data in Cloud is that the verification of data integrity at untrustedserver. The verifier’s role has two categories: private access ability and public access ability.

The private access ability scheme achieves high efficient, while the public access ability allows anyone, not only the data owner, to challenge the correctness of data storage when it has no private information in the server. The major concern in this scheme is secure and effective in dynamic operations on data blocks...

A Flow Sensitive Security Model for Cloud Computing Systems

Grazed from Cornell. Author: Wen Zeng, Chunyan Mu, Maciej Koutny, Paul Watson.

The extent and importance of cloud computing is rapidly increasing due to the ever increasing demand for internet services and communications. Instead of building individual information technology infrastructure to host databases or software, a third party can host them in its large server clouds. Large organizations may wish to keep sensitive information on their more restricted servers rather than in the public cloud.

This has led to the introduction of federated cloud computing (FCC) in which both public and private cloud computing resources are used. A federated cloud is the deployment and management of multiple cloud computing services with the aim of matching business needs. Large number of data and services are required to be allocated in different clouds for business concerns, which creates security risks, due to the operational independence of clouds and their geographic distribution...

Microsoft acquires New Zealand-based cloud computing company GreenButton

Grazed from TheNextWeb. Author: Jon Russell.

Microsoft is stepping up its cloud computing game after acquiring GreenButton, a New Zealand-based startup that uses its Azure platform and has an existing relationship with the Redmond company. The deal was first revealed on a New Zealand government website, which shows that Microsoft is now the company sole shareholder, and Microsoft has since confirmed the deal to TNW and it has been officially announced on its blog. The value of the deal has not been made public.

GreenButton provides ‘on-demand’ cloud solutions, based around a high-intensity cloud burst technology — for example, customers can use its products to run high performance computer, or big data analytics in the cloud. The premise is that GreenButton saves them the pain of investing in and maintaining high-intensity hardware and network resources that are traditionally required to carry out these tasks...

Server CPU Performance Pre and Post Cloud Computing - infographic

Grazed from ProfitBricks. Author: Andy Lurie.

Remember When CPU Performance was Guaranteed? Since the early launch of the PC in the early 1980’s, CPU performance has been defined by the clock speed and front side bus of the processer. It was simple and easy to understand and Intel and AMD battled the MHz and GHz wars over the years.

Server CPU Speeds

This infographic looks at server class CPUs from the Pentium era CPUs of 1993 to today. Along the way, a lot of new technologies totally transformed the way we look at CPU performance. Beginning with the advent of X86 server virtualization in 2001, VMware and other virtualization technologies permitted multiple operating systems, and their related processes, to be run in parallel on a single CPU...

Microsoft's Cloud, Juniper's Opportunity: ISI Group Tidbits from Ethernet Summit

Grazed from Barrons. Author: Tierman Ray.

ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall today weighs in with some thoughts on cloud computing after attending the first day of the Ethernet Technology Summit taking place this week. For those of you unfamiliar, the summit is an annual event attended by “several hundred mostly senior level engineering staff and mid-level management” from “leading companies” such as Google (GOOG), Comcast (CMCSA), Cisco Systems (CSCO), Dell and startup Big Switch, among others, “to exchange thoughts on future network topology design.” Overall, he sees some progress by Cisco, and opportunities for Juniper Networks (JNPR):

We came away convinced that the Ethernet market and technology dynamics will continue to evolve very rapidly and could create greater opportunity for share shifts in the coming years. While more open models for switching and routing platforms create risk for incumbents, we believe CSCO [NEUTRAL] is adapting to emerging industry trends with skill (e.g., ACI or application-centric infrastructure with the Nexus 9k, etc.) and we continue to warm up to the name...

Afraid of the cloud? How to handle your fears

Grazed from ComputerWorld. Author: Sharon Gaudin.

A study released this week shows that 73% of IT executives believe cloud providers are hiding performance problems. Industry analysts say IT professionals are smart to be cautious, but added that they need to do their homework and ask the right questions before selecting a vendor.

"I don't know if it's a matter of distrust," said Jagdish Rebello, an analyst with IHS. "They are wary of the hype. The enterprise IT folks are being very, very cautious about their migration to the cloud. They see the cost benefits but when they look at reliability and security, there is essentially a fear of going wholeheartedly to the cloud."...
